The Older The Better – Why Do Leather Armchairs Age So Well?

Monday November 16, 2009

Most things we buy gradually age and then need replacing. So why is it that this doesn’t seem to apply to leather armchairs?

It is a good thing with regard to the fact that once you have bought some, you shouldn’t need to replace them for a long time. That makes them a good buy financially, provided you get armchairs that are of good quality.

But while we love the smell of leather armchairs when we first get them, and while we love how they look, there is no doubt that they get better the older they are. If you have ever been in a coffee house or a hotel, or even a pub, you will often find a few battered old leather armchairs dotted about. And they always seem to be the first chairs that everyone heads for!

The reason is perfectly clear. These chairs are not only comfortable, they also have character. If you think of an old leather jacket, the effect with a leather armchair that has seen better days is exactly the same. Obviously you should make sure you look after the leather as much as you can – buying proper leather cleaner is a good bet, and using it as often as indicated will help to keep the leather supple and the finish nice and attractive.

Leather is very hard wearing and it is quite hard to tear as well. But obviously as that armchair is sat in and used more and more, it will be subject to creases over time. It is often these creases which have a slight tendency to wear out first, and tear if any strain is put on them. This is where that leather cleaner comes in handy as it will help to prevent this from happening.

We have a real penchant for leather armchairs in this country though, particularly in certain settings. Think of the classic Chesterfield look, and many other similar styles, which look perfectly at home in the library of a stately home, or any National Trust property you can think of! It really is amazing and the scene isn’t complete with an armchair of any other kind.

But perhaps the most wonderful thing you get from these armchairs is warmth. That doesn’t come with any other type of armchair, and perhaps part of the reason why this is so is because of the quality of the leather. It is also the case that the longer you have something, the more likely you are to really get attached to it. You can even throw a blanket over the back of a leather armchair and it will still look wonderful in the right setting.

There is no doubt that leather armchairs are versatile, ageless and very fitting in a number of different rooms in the home. And that is why they become such a permanent part of our lives – and they can see us through many years of enjoyment too.
