Do Mismatched Leather Armchairs Work?

Tuesday November 17, 2009

Leather armchairs are known to have a lot of character. In fact it is arguably one of the reasons why so many people like them. They are hardwearing of course, but this leads to a longer life and a more rugged look as they age.

But let’s suppose you need to buy more than one armchair. You have two options open to you in this situation. You can either buy two leather armchairs that are exactly the same, or you can buy two that are completely different. Which option is best?

A lot will depend on how you feel about furniture. Some people couldn’t think of anything but having a matching set. If you fall into this category then your choice is practically made for you!

But supposing you like the idea of having two separate designs? What steps could you take then to ensure that the finished result looks good, and the two designs meld together and don’t clash?

Well you do have other options in this area that you should think about first. First of all you could buy two leather armchairs that are of the same design. The only difference here then would be the colour of the leather. Secondly you could choose two completely different leather armchairs. They might vary in shape and size for example, although you should always try to get the same quality for both if you can.

The best way to get started here is to find the ranges of leather armchairs that you particularly like. They could both be from the same manufacturer, or you could decide to opt for two separate ones. In either case, make sure you send off for some colour swatches for the armchairs you like.

This is hugely important, and while it might delay the ordering process slightly it will lead to much better results. When you have the swatches in front of you, you can mix and match them to ensure you have two colours that sit well together. Don’t rely on the pictures in a catalogue to try and match two leather armchairs together. If the lighting is slightly different it can be quite misleading.

Once you have the swatches try putting different colours together until you find the combination you like. It usually works best to make sure you have the same grade of leather each time. It can clash dreadfully if you have one new piece of leather next to another one that has been expertly aged.

In the end you will only see the finished results of your choices when they are sitting in your house together. But if you go through these stages you will be much more likely to get it right.

Be sure to compare those swatches to all the other colours you have present in the room the armchairs will go in as well. You could always repaint if necessary, but it’s a lot easier to get the colours just right to begin with!
